Like I should start wearing bow ties with plaid shirts and suspenders with high waisted khakis. Why?

because when most people want a motorcycle, they want the sexiest, or most bad ass thing they can get. Something like this

Kinja'd!!!

Or this

Kinja'd!!!

But you know what I want. A fucking scooter. More specifically a Honda Helix 250. I found a couple one CL today. And I have to say I like it, and it’ll do everything I want it too.

Kinja'd!!!

1. It will do 60mph, in fact it’ll do 75, but it has to problem cruising at 55-60.

2. It’s got storage space, a trunk, and glove box, most have an extra cargo box like the one depicted.

3, It won’t make me feel like a badass.

My biggest fear with a motorcycle is my own judgement. In a car you’ve got a huge margin of error, namely a steel cage, and four tires. But on a bike you don’t. Also on a bike you can easily feel like you’re a badass, after all your bike is bad ass so riding it must mean YOU are a badass. Therefor you can, no you NEED TO, do badass things, like speed, or do a wheelie, or swerve though traffic. But on a lame ass scooter with 20hp you won’t feel like a bad ass, you’ll feel like a dork, and I think that’s what I need. The only reason I even want to upgrade from my 6.5hp scooter is that I want to be able to occasionally go out of town, and not feel quite as stressed on 35mph roads in town.

I desperately want a moped. Preferable an old Honda, like a Spree or a Hobbit. Maybe an old Tomos, but really I’d take anything. My mom is vetoing it completely until I graduate from college.

The thing is when I graduate I’m going to want a real motorcycle. Rebel 250 is the “dream bike” as in the one that is cheap enough and fast enough to use.

I’ve got a Honda Aero80 and I love it. but It does make me want more of a bike. I’m either going to end up with a Helix, like that or a new CB300F. I’ve also considered a CBR300 because you can get ABS one them which sounds like a good idea. But then you have the problem of ridding a sportbike a responsibility I don’t know if I can handle. A Honda Nighthawk is also an option if I decide not to buy new.

is your aero 80 registered as a moped or a motorcycle? NC has everything over 50cc as a motorcycle.

Obligatory.

It needs to be registered as a motorcycle, and I need to get my permit and eventually motorcycle licence. I actually promised my wife I’d stop riding it until I got that taken care of. I also need insurance. But yeah if it was a 50 I wouldn’t need any of that.

Nothing wrong with a scooter.

I’ve been looking at branching out from ATCs and Quads lately. Rehabbing those look like a money maker.

Hell, I’d daily a Honda Helix. But it only sold from 87-88.

Kinja'd!!!

Looks oddly similar.

Last June NC started issuing plates for mopeds. Kinda sucks.

in the US the Helix was sold from 87-88, then again from 92-96, and then again from 2003-2007. Super weird.

Had no idea they tried it 3 times!

I’ve only known one guy that owned one. He called it the Goldwing of scooters. He also had two Goldwings.

Of the three you listed, I’m pretty sure the Helix is a close second. The Victory only narrowly edges it out. The Hayabusa is a distant third, the Helix is way cooler,

“Also on a bike you can easily feel like you’re a badass, after all your bike is bad ass so riding it must mean YOU are a badass. Therefor you can, no you NEED TO, do badass things, like speed, or do a wheelie, or swerve though traffic.”

Pro tip - bikes are like cars. Lots of people restore sweet muscle cars and sports cars all the time and don’t flog them at the limit on a daily commute. Why? Too much work put into it. I invested too much in my gear and too much time into my little CB650SC to see it all get ruined because I wanted to be “bad ass”. So if your only reason for not wanting a bike is because of yourself? I don’t think that should hold you back. Now I’ll be honest - a 250cc scooter will get way better mileage than my bike any day of the week. So if you want practicality, the scooter wins hands down.

Besides, no one thinks you’re cool for riding like a jackass besides people who either have daddy issues or a genetic predisposition against self-preservation and general lack of empathy.

One of the custodians at the last school I taught at had one of these. It got a fair bit of DD miles on it.

That seems a pretty accurate description, except now Honda makes/has made the Silverwing 600cc.

CB300F is a fine machine. A guy I work with got one about a year ago and is becoming a very proficient motorcyclist indeed.
